Our residential program entitles international students to F1 visas, our STEM designation allows students to apply for an OPT as they finish to gain more experience in their field. Our classification is “Digital Communications and Multi-Media” 0.90702.

If you are interested in an online, asynchronous professional program, we have a separate program: User Experience Master of Science (UX MS). Click here to learn more about this degree.

International Applicants

English Language Competency

MSU has TOEFL/ IELTS minimum scores of 80, our department has a minimum TOEFL of 85. No subscore below 19 for reading, listening, and speaking and no subscore below 22 for writing. The minimum average score for IELTS is 6.5 with no subscore below 6.0. Duolingo scores must be 110 or higher. See MSU Graduate Studies website for more information. Lower scores may be admitted on a conditional basis, contact us for more information. Our International students who have a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. institution do not need a TOEFL/IELTS score.

Those who have TOEFL scores sufficient for MSU admission, but lower than our department standards will be required to take the MSU English Language test at the MSU ELT center. The MSU ELT test is free to admitted students. The master’s committee may offer conditional acceptance to international students at their discretion. These students would also need to take the MSU ELT before their status is changed to unrestricted. Those who are accepted into the program conditionally will be advised to set up a test with the center before the start of classes. Students need a score of 85 overall in the MSU ELT, and not below 80 in each subsection (writing; reading; speaking & listening) to enroll unrestricted in MI 800 level classes. Students who get lower scores will be enrolled in the appropriate Advanced Academic English (AAE) classes.

Documentation of your degree completion

Official documents that certify a student has completed their degree vary widely in different countries. To be certain we receive what is required by the university, we require that official copies of ALL records from all postsecondary schooling attended/attending. Mark sheets, transcripts, certificates, and diplomas, must be submitted as official documents directly from each institution. In most cases, these documents will need to be sent in official, sealed, issuing institution envelopes.

Records must show courses taken, grades earned, and must be translated into English if the original records are in another language. Translations must be done by the issuing institution, a certified translator in the country of study, or by an American Translator’s Association certified translator in the US. The original record should be also included. See information on the Academic Programs website: https://reg.msu.edu/AcademicPrograms/Text.aspx?Section=111#s323

Note that MSU requires final, degree-granting academic records to be sent as proof of degree award. Many international transcripts do not indicate degree award information, and therefore MSU requests applicants send official copies of their final degree diplomas as proof of degree award.

For applicants who have been awarded degrees – final, official records should be sent during the application process. For applicants completing degree programs during the application process, the latest, official, available academic records should be sent, with final records sent as soon as possible after admission.

A Financial affidavit

This is required by the United States government.  More details and instructions are at this page.

An Example of Your Skills: Selecting what represents YOU best

Deciding what to submit for your application

A portfolio: Because our program has both a creative and research focus, we encourage students to submit a portfolio of their work to demonstrate their skills and previous training. This portfolio could be in the form of a pdf that has images of your work; a personal website with links to your work or detailing your achievements; an app or part of the game you developed; papers from one or more research projects where you participated, or any combination. The stipulation is that the student make it very clear exactly what is their work, especially if it is part of a larger project that was produced by a team.

A research paper: This requirement would demonstrate the student’s ability to do advanced academic research. It could be in the form of a literature review, an experiment or study, or some other written research. The paper must have correct citation formatting and be free from plagiarism. The paper should show deep analytical thinking and close attention to detail. If the paper is a team project, the student must clearly show their contribution to the paper.

The GRE: Traditionally, The Graduate Records Examination (GRE) has long been used to evaluate and rank applicants to graduate programs. In theory, the test is supposed to help admissions committees to efficiently and objectively sort candidates into ranked tiers. The GRE is sometimes helpful for students who have worked for several years and want to demonstrate their academic potential. The scores can potentially provide evidence of likely success in a graduate program. The GRE can also be helpful for students from undergraduate institutions that are not well known to the committee, to help indicate academic preparation. However, there are concerns that the GRE is biased and discriminatory, as GRE scores strongly correlate with race, gender, and socioeconomic status. As such, if students choose not to submit a GRE score that is their option.

A student can submit one, two, or all three of the above items.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees are set yearly and vary based on residency and college level.  Please use the MSU tuition calculator https://ctlr.msu.edu/costudentaccounts/TuitionCalculator.aspx to find current costs.

Students usually complete the degree in 30 credits, so based on your rate in the tuition calculator you can find your final cost.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

U.S. Citizens or permanent residents may apply for federal and needs based loans by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Visit https://finaid.msu.edu/grad.asp for more information.

Our department gives out scholarships to current students based on achievements in the program.  The application deadline is mid-February of each year and most of the awards are for the following year. For more details visit this page. However, students should be prepared to pay for their entire program.

The Graduate School posts information about assistantships on their website. Our department employs several students hourly for being graduate learning assistants (e.g., working closely with our professors and assisting in undergraduate classes), and hourly research assistants. We have very few assistantships for students, and these are usually offered to current students with unique skills that are needed for research projects. These skills often include experience in advanced statistical analysis, programming, or experience in teaching at the tertiary level.  Contact the master’s program director for more information.
